German Shepherd: Size, Lifespan and Care Basics
German Shepherds live 12 to 14 years by the AKC’s figure and count as seniors from 10 years 6 months. On exercise the answer is a lot: the Royal Kennel Club says more than 2 hours a day, and the AKC wants the mind worked as well. A dog this protective also needs an owner who trains it.

How long do German Shepherds live?
The American Kennel Club (AKC) gives the German Shepherd a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years. The Royal Kennel Club (RKC) in the UK puts the breed in its “over 10 years” band.
Both figures describe the breed as a whole. They are ranges for typical dogs of the breed, not a forecast for any one dog.
Of the 30 breeds profiled on Pettify, 13 have a longer upper estimate than the German Shepherd and 13 a shorter one.
When is a German Shepherd a senior?
The 2019 AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog’s estimated lifespan. Taking the upper end of the AKC range, 14 years, a German Shepherd counts as a senior from 10 years 6 months.
| Stage | Age |
|---|---|
| Puppy | until 12 months |
| Adult | 12 months to 10 years 6 months |
| Senior | from 10 years 6 months |
Pettify builds its care plan from your dog’s breed and birth date and uses these stages: for a German Shepherd, puppy until 12 months and senior from 10 years 6 months. When your dog moves to a new stage, the app adjusts the plan and tells you.
Grooming and shedding
The RKC suggests grooming a German Shepherd more than once a week and describes the coat as short & long; it lists the breed as one that sheds. On the AKC’s scales the breed rates 4 out of 5 for shedding and 2 out of 5 for how often the coat needs care.
The RKC accepts both a short and a long coat, the long one only in recent years. The AKC describes a medium-length double coat, harsh and close-lying on top with a softer layer beneath.
Most of the year the coat is easy to keep: a quick brush every few days and an occasional bath. Once or twice a year it sheds far more heavily, and then the brush needs to come out more often.
Exercise
The RKC puts the exercise a German Shepherd needs at more than 2 hours a day. The AKC rates the breed 5 out of 5 for energy and 5 out of 5 for mental stimulation needs.
Treat the RKC figure as a daily minimum to plan around, not a weekend target. It is easier to deliver in parts: a long walk, a run or hike, and shorter sessions of training or play. Because the breed was shaped by herding, a GSD also needs work for its head, and sports such as herding, tracking, agility and dock diving give it both kinds in one go.
A puppy’s routine can begin small, with brief walks each day and games inside a secure fence. The AKC also advises keeping a German Shepherd on the leash outside fenced areas, since even a well-trained dog can get distracted and miss a command. Without enough outlet, the AKC warns, frustration tends to show up as unwanted behavior.
Weight
The AKC gives the adult weight of the German Shepherd as “65–90 pounds (male), 50–70 pounds (female)”, which is 29.5–40.8 kg for males and 22.7–31.8 kg for females. The height at the shoulder is 24–26 inches (male), 22–24 inches (female).
The Waltham growth study placed the German Shepherd in its extra-large size group. Our extra-large breed puppy weight chart shows the typical weight of puppies in that group, by age and sex, from 12 weeks to 2 years.
Owning a German Shepherd: what to know
Police and military units around the world use German Shepherds, but the breed was made for sheep. Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, built it in the late 1800s from local herding strains, then steered it toward police and army work as herding jobs dried up.
Courageous, confident and smart, in the AKC’s words, the German Shepherd shows two sides in its ratings. With its own people it scores 5 out of 5 for affection and the same with young children. With people it does not know it sits at 3 out of 5, and its watchdog score is 5 out of 5. The breed standard expects a certain reserve rather than instant friendship, and the AKC notes its reputation as a one-person dog, most loyal to the owner who looks after it.
Other dogs get a middling 3 out of 5, so introductions deserve care. Trainability is 5 out of 5: German Shepherds can learn dozens of commands and work as guide, service, tracking and sentinel dogs. That same ability is why training matters so much: a large, protective dog that has not been taught what is expected is hard to live with, and the lessons are best begun early. Pettify’s care plan counts a German Shepherd as a puppy until 12 months.
The RKC suggests a large house with a large garden, in town or country. Adaptability is rated 5 out of 5, so a smaller home can work when the exercise is reliable. The breed ranked 4th in the AKC’s 2025 registrations, and its early fame in the United States was helped along by the film dogs Rin-Tin-Tin and Strongheart.
Frequently asked questions
Are German Shepherds good with kids?
The AKC rates the breed 5 out of 5 with young children and the same for affection with family, so a well-raised GSD can be a gentle family dog. Its size and protective instinct mean that early training, and an adult nearby when small children play, still matter.
Are German Shepherds good guard dogs?
Yes, guarding is part of the design. The AKC gives the breed 5 out of 5 for watchdog and protective nature and lists police and sentinel work among its jobs. It is reserved with strangers, at 3 out of 5, so the owner’s task is to shape that instinct through training, not to build it.
Why are German Shepherds called Alsatians?
In Britain around the First World War, a time of anti-German feeling, the breed was called the Alsatian, and the AKC notes that many British dog lovers still prefer that name. The AKC’s own name for the breed is German Shepherd Dog, often shortened to GSD.
What colors are German Shepherds?
The RKC’s standard colors include black and tan, black and gold, solid black, gray, bicolor, and sable in several shades, from gold sable to dark sable. All of these are correct for the breed in the UK, where both the short and the long coat are accepted.
