French Bulldog: Size, Lifespan and Care Basics
French Bulldogs live 10 to 12 years on the AKC’s figures, and the AAHA rule makes a Frenchie a senior at 9 years. This small companion seldom barks and was bred for company, not work. The Royal Kennel Club lists a flat as a suitable home and asks for up to 1 hour a day of exercise.

How long do French Bulldogs live?
The American Kennel Club (AKC) gives the French Bulldog a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. The Royal Kennel Club (RKC) in the UK puts the breed in its “over 10 years” band.
Both figures describe the breed as a whole. They are ranges for typical dogs of the breed, not a forecast for any one dog.
Of the 30 breeds profiled on Pettify, 21 have a longer upper estimate than the French Bulldog and 4 a shorter one.
When is a French Bulldog a senior?
The 2019 AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog’s estimated lifespan. Taking the upper end of the AKC range, 12 years, a French Bulldog counts as a senior from 9 years.
| Stage | Age |
|---|---|
| Puppy | until 9 months |
| Adult | 9 months to 9 years |
| Senior | from 9 years |
Pettify builds its care plan from your dog’s breed and birth date and uses these stages: for a French Bulldog, puppy until 9 months and senior from 9 years. When your dog moves to a new stage, the app adjusts the plan and tells you.
Grooming and shedding
The RKC suggests grooming a French Bulldog once a week and describes the coat as short; it lists the breed as one that sheds. On the AKC’s scales the breed rates 3 out of 5 for shedding and 1 out of 5 for how often the coat needs care.
There is not much coat to manage: it is smooth and short, and the AKC describes it as shedding only lightly. Some hair still comes out, and a few minutes a week with whichever tool you prefer, a rubber mitt, a hound glove or a medium-bristle brush, takes care of it. Drooling sits mid-scale on the AKC’s ratings, at 3 out of 5.
Exercise
The RKC puts the exercise a French Bulldog needs at up to 1 hour a day. The AKC rates the breed 3 out of 5 for energy and 3 out of 5 for mental stimulation needs.
Frenchies need movement every day, but not much of it at a time. One short outing, a walk or a game outdoors with you, is what the AKC considers enough, and its puppy notes picture a young Frenchie happy with a brisk walk twice a day and happiest of all on your lap.
For variety, the breed takes part in obedience, agility and rally. Those sports also give a dog rated 5 out of 5 for playfulness a regular, structured game to share with its owner.
Weight
The AKC gives the adult weight of the French Bulldog as “under 28 pounds”, which is under 12.7 kg. The height at the shoulder is 11–13 inches.
The Waltham growth study gives the French Bulldog no size group of its own, so we place it in the medium group by its AKC adult weight. Our medium breed puppy weight chart shows the typical weight of puppies in that group, by age and sex, from 12 weeks to 2 years.
Owning a French Bulldog: what to know
No breed ranked higher in the AKC’s registration figures for 2025: the French Bulldog came 1st. In Britain, RKC registrations grew tenfold between 2009 and 2015, and by 2015 the Frenchie was the third most popular breed in the UK.
For a dog with French in its name, the story begins in England. Lace makers in Nottingham kept a small, toy-sized Bulldog in the mid-1800s, and when the Industrial Revolution pushed many of them to northern France, the dogs went too. The upright bat ears came from crosses made there over the following decades. Paris turned the newcomer into a fashionable city dog, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec both put it in their art, and the RKC recognized the breed in 1906.
Living with one is mostly easy company. The AKC calls the Frenchie playful, smart and adaptable, and rates it 5 out of 5 with young children, 5 out of 5 for openness to strangers and 4 out of 5 with other dogs. In its view the breed settles as happily with a single owner or a couple as with a family.
Barking rates 1 out of 5, the bottom of the scale, which makes a Frenchie an easy neighbor in a shared building. Quiet does not mean unaware, though: the AKC still credits the breed with the alertness of a good watchdog and rates its protective side 3 out of 5.
Trainability scores 4 out of 5, and the AKC mentions a stubborn streak in puppies that steady training helps to rein in. In Pettify’s care plan a Frenchie stays a puppy until 9 months, and the early lessons belong in those first months. The RKC’s home lines fit city life: a flat, a small or medium garden, and town or country alike, in line with an adaptability rating of 5 out of 5.
Frequently asked questions
Do French Bulldogs bark a lot?
Very little. The AKC rates the breed 1 out of 5 for barking, the lowest score it gives, and notes that Frenchies seldom bark. They do tend to notice what happens around them, which is why the AKC still considers them good watchdogs.
Is a French Bulldog good for an apartment?
Yes, by both clubs’ measures. The RKC lists a flat or apartment as a suitable home with a small or medium garden, and the AKC rates the Frenchie 5 out of 5 for adaptability. A low barking score and exercise needs of up to 1 hour a day make shared walls easier too.
Why are they called French Bulldogs if they come from England?
Its ancestors were English: small Bulldogs kept by lace workers in Nottingham. When many of those workers moved to northern France in the 1800s, the dogs went with them, and it was in France that the breed took shape and got the name Bouledogue Français. The AKC still gives England as the breed’s country of origin.
What colors do French Bulldogs come in?
The RKC’s standard colors for the breed are brindle, light brindle, dark brindle, brindle and white, fawn, fawn and white, fawn pied, fawn with a black mask, and pied. In practice that means brindle or fawn, alone or with white.
