Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Size, Lifespan and Care Basics

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have an AKC life expectancy of 12 to 15 years, so the AAHA rule makes a Cavalier a senior at 11 years 3 months. This is a toy spaniel descended from sporting dogs: happy on a lap, still keen on a scent, and at its best when its people are around.

How long do Cavalier King Charles Spaniels live?

The American Kennel Club (AKC) gives the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. The Royal Kennel Club (RKC) in the UK puts the breed in its “over 12 years” band.

Both figures describe the breed as a whole. They are ranges for typical dogs of the breed, not a forecast for any one dog.

Of the 30 breeds profiled on Pettify, 6 have a longer upper estimate than the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and 17 a shorter one.

When is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel a senior?

The 2019 AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog’s estimated lifespan. Taking the upper end of the AKC range, 15 years, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel counts as a senior from 11 years 3 months.

Pettify builds its care plan from your dog’s breed and birth date and uses these stages: for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, puppy until 9 months and senior from 11 years 3 months. When your dog moves to a new stage, the app adjusts the plan and tells you.

Grooming and shedding

The RKC suggests grooming a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel more than once a week and describes the coat as medium; it lists the breed as one that sheds. On the AKC’s scales the breed rates 2 out of 5 for shedding and 2 out of 5 for how often the coat needs care.

Brushing does most of the work, and Cavaliers tend to enjoy it, the AKC notes, so a routine of several sessions a week is easy to keep up. A bath now and then completes it. Regular brushing keeps the silky coat, which can be wavy, glossy and free of tangles. Its colors come in four set patterns, covered in the questions below.

Exercise

The RKC puts the exercise a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel needs at up to 1 hour a day. The AKC rates the breed 3 out of 5 for energy and 3 out of 5 for mental stimulation needs.

Under the lap-dog role sits a sporting spaniel. The RKC thinks the toy spaniels were probably bred down from sporting breeds, and says the Blenheim type kept its knack for flushing game. Today that shows in a dog that will gladly chase a squirrel across the yard, and the AKC says Cavaliers do well in a number of canine sports.

The breed also takes its cue from you. The AKC describes dogs that are as glad to spend the day on the sofa as to go for a walk, so the RKC’s figure of up to 1 hour a day reads as a ceiling rather than a quota.

Weight

The AKC gives the adult weight of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as “13–18 pounds”, which is 5.9–8.2 kg. The height at the shoulder is 12–13 inches.

The Waltham growth study gives the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel no size group of its own, so we place it in the small group by its AKC adult weight. Our small breed puppy weight chart shows the typical weight of puppies in that group, by age and sex, from 12 weeks to 2 years.

Owning a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: what to know

Two Stuart kings gave the breed its name. Charles I and his son Charles II both doted on toy spaniels, and the diarist Samuel Pepys wrote that Charles II paid more attention to breeding them than to running the country. The AKC adds that Charles II issued a decree letting his dogs into any public place, Parliament included. “Cavalier” recalls the royalists who backed the Stuarts in the civil war.

The breed you meet today is a revival. In Victorian times fashion turned to toy spaniels with domed heads and shorter muzzles, and the older style nearly vanished. In the 1920s an American, Roswell Eldridge, offered a cash prize to British breeders who could bring back the old type, the AKC says, and the RKC records special prizes for it at Crufts from 1926 to 1930. A breed club followed in 1928, and the Kennel Club recognized the Cavalier as a breed of its own in 1945. The AKC gave it full recognition in 1995.

Living with one is mostly a matter of company. The breed scores 5 out of 5 for affection with family, and in the AKC’s view it suits active owners and homebodies equally well. Trainability rates 4 out of 5. On noise and guarding it lands mid-scale, 3 out of 5 for barking and the same as a watchdog, while strangers get a friendly 4 out of 5.

Home size is not a sticking point: the RKC’s lines allow a flat or apartment, a small or medium garden, and town or country alike. Adaptability rates 3 out of 5. The breed only reached the United States in the 1950s, the AKC notes, and in 2025 the Cavalier was 12th among AKC registrations. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Cavalier and a King Charles Spaniel?

They share ancestors but are separate breeds. The King Charles, called the English Toy Spaniel in America, has the domed skull and short muzzle that Victorian fashion favored. The Cavalier keeps the older look, slightly larger with a flatter skull and a longer muzzle, and the RKC says it kept more of the sporting instinct.

Are Cavaliers good with kids and other dogs?

Yes, on the AKC’s ratings: 5 out of 5 with young children and 5 out of 5 with other dogs, the top score on both. The AKC’s breed text says as much in words, and the temperament it describes is affectionate, gentle and graceful.

What colors do Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in?

Four: Blenheim (chestnut on white), tricolor (black and white with tan), black and tan, and ruby, a rich red. Blenheim is named for Blenheim Palace, home of the Dukes of Marlborough, who bred the red-and-white dogs. The RKC says ruby was the last of the four to appear.

Can Cavaliers be off leash?

Not by the AKC’s advice. The sporting spaniel is still in there: a Cavalier that catches a scent or spots something to chase may ignore your call, so free running belongs in a fenced yard, which the AKC recommends having.
